As of now, NASA plans to send humans to Mars in the 2020s. This means that around the time the project is ready to launch, middle school students like us will be the ideal age to become astronauts. WE could be the first humans to walk on Mars (or, just work behind the scenes with accomplishing that goal). After studying Mars and space-travel technology, we must develop a plan for colonizing Mars in the future. Below, you can watch the message we received from Daniel Howse, Mr. President himself, explaining our mission:
To successfully carry out our Mission to Mars, we must:
- Develop a strategy on how to take our crew and supplies to build our colony from Earth to Mars - Create a civilization for the future "Martians" that are going to live on Mars - Defend these plans in front of a panel of experts
Science Officer The science officers have various jobs to complete. The first thing that they have to do is research about the possibility of life on Mars. Next, they have to defend our reasoning of the geology and climate for the location of our colony. The science officer then has to determine how to sustain life on Mars for so that we can successfully continue to live safely. They then have to choose the best sites to look for life, and advise other specialists concerning in science. The final thing that the science officers have to do is work with the engineers to advise on a geographic terrain.
City Planner The city planner has many jobs to do. First she has to determine important features for our future colony, and prioritize them. Then, she has to locate the features she found on Mars. The science officer then has to decide on the location of our colony, and design it considering how it will grow over time with phases. Finally, she has to collaborate with other team specialists about the location and design of the city.
Engineer The engineers have many jobs to do. First off, they have to learn how NASA controls drones and rovers over large distances. This is so they can design the drones and rovers to roam on Mars more easily with the Science Officer. They also have to work with the City Planner to plan and model the colony. This includes things such as architecture and power plants. Finally, with the plan for the colony that they've created before, the engineers have to design a craft to get to Mars, without being able to go back to Earth.
Political Scientist The political scientists have to do a lot of things to make this mission possible. The first thing that they have to do is determine the kind of government we have to set up on Mars. Then, they have to design a symbol for our colony. After that is done, the science officers have to decide what public services are important and needed. They then have to work with the Science Officer and Engineer to plan how to transport the items needed to Mars. the last thing that they have to do is write a Constitution or Charter to self govern.
